Your Archetype Is Not Your Ceiling

By Abed · 11 August 2026 · 4 min read

There is a quiet excuse hiding in most LinkedIn strategies. "I'm not a storyteller." "I'm not contrarian enough for the takes." "I'm just the technical one." The belief underneath is that some kinds of creator have a higher ceiling than others, and you got dealt the wrong kind. So we tested it.

Every creator in the Authority Index carries one of six archetypes, a description of who they are on the platform: creator educator, industry analyst, contrarian voice, story-led expert, community builder, niche specialist. If archetype set your ceiling, the share of truly exceptional posts should differ sharply between them. The loud contrarians should hit big constantly, the quiet specialists rarely.

Here is the measurement. Across the six archetypes, the rate of posts our model labels Exceptional runs from 8.7% to 9.8%. Re-run the numbers creator-weighted, so no single prolific account can drag its group, and the spread tightens further: 9.2% to 9.9%. Six different ways of being on LinkedIn, and the hit rate is the same to within about one post in a hundred.

Every archetype lands an exceptional post at close to the same rate: roughly one in ten or eleven. The ceiling is flat. Execution decides.

The part that should change your strategy

The flat line is more surprising than it looks, because these groups are not otherwise similar. Between archetype cohorts, the typical creator's engagement differs by up to twelvefold. Audiences differ, styles differ, raw numbers differ enormously. And yet the rate at which each archetype produces its best work barely moves. Whatever produces an exceptional post, it is not the costume.

Why I will not rank them for you

You may notice I have not told you which archetype sits at 9.8% and which at 8.7%. That is deliberate. The ordering changes depending on how you count, pooled versus creator-weighted, and a ranking that flips with the method is not a finding, it is noise wearing a medal. The spread is the finding: it is small, and it stays small however we cut it.

One boundary on this claim. These are six archetypes measured across LinkedIn's strongest B2B creators. The data says none of the six is a handicap at that level. It does not say identity is irrelevant, and it does not measure archetypes outside this corpus. What it kills is the specific excuse: that your kind of creator cannot produce top-tier posts at the same rate as the loud kind.

What to do with this

Stop auditioning for a different archetype. The one you have carries the same ceiling as the others. Redirect that energy to the levers that do move outcomes: a stated position, a fully developed idea, a clean ending (the seven levers, in order of weight). The costume was never the constraint. The craft was.

See where you stand. The free Authority Lab audit scores your writing and your profile against the Index and shows you which lever is costing you the most points.
