Art of Posting - Lesson 3

Post Structures

The five structures most posts fall into, and how to pick the one your material needs

Every post you write implicitly follows a structure. The question is whether that structure is working for you or against you.

Strong creators don't have more ideas. They have a smaller set of structural moves they execute with precision.

This lesson teaches you the 5 primary post structures found across The Authority Index (30,388 posts). Split the index by structure and the Exceptional rate stays flat, somewhere around 9 to 10 per cent whichever shape the creator writes in, so treat structure as a choice about reader experience rather than a bid for reach.

The 5 Primary Post Structures

Hook → Numbered List: the most scannable shape. Use it when the value is a set of parallel items and the reader can take any one of them away.

Hook → Framework: educational authority. Use it when the items only make sense in sequence. Story → Insight: emotional resonance, best for Inspire intent.

Contrarian → Proof: challenging then validating, best for Provoke intent. Direct Instruction: action first, for when the reader wants the step rather than the reasoning.

Why Structure Beats Style

Structure is the most reusable element in a post. You can borrow a structure without copying voice, tone, or topic.

Hook → Numbered List gets used so heavily because it satisfies two cognitive needs at once: the hook creates tension, and the list delivers resolution in a shape the eye can take in at speed. That is a reason to reach for it when the material is genuinely a list, and a reason to resist it when the material is an argument. A list cannot argue.

Choosing Your Default Structural Structure

Different creators use different structures - but structure always comes before style. Once you recognise the pattern, you can replicate it without copying words.

Read 10 posts from creators you admire. Name the post structure for each one. Notice which structures feel natural to you. That's your starting signal.
