Art of Authority - Lesson 4
Your Arena
Industry as context, pillars as topic strategy, choosing the ground you own
Your industry is context. Your pillars are strategy. The mistake most experts make is treating their whole industry as their topic, which makes them describable to no one and interesting to everyone-in-general, the definition of forgettable.
The corpus shows pillar choice is one of the most consequential decisions you make. The gap between the strongest and weakest content pillars is large, and it is a gap you choose into or out of every time you pick a subject.
This lesson is about narrowing on purpose. You will pick the two or three pillars you will actually own, using live engagement from the corpus to choose ground that is both yours and worth standing on.
Context vs. Ground
The interest graph does not reward 'marketing' as a topic. It rewards a creator who is reliably about 'positioning for technical founders.' The narrower the ground, the faster the graph learns you and the harder you are to replace.
Your industry situates you. Your pillars are the two or three specific territories you return to until your name and the topic become the same thought in the reader's head.
Choose Ground the Data Respects
Not all pillars carry the same ceiling. Some topics reliably earn attention; others are necessary but quiet. You want pillars that both fit your thesis and the corpus rewards. Otherwise you are choosing a hard game for no reason.
The quick picker below shows pillars with how far each runs above or below its own authors' average post. Pick two or three. This is a starting position, not a cage. The full pillar builder, with intent mixes and proof mapping, lives in the Business Blueprint.
The Method Signal
How you cover a pillar matters as much as which pillar you pick. Method content, the post that teaches a replicable system with an input, a process and an outcome, carries the strongest authority signal in the corpus. Behind-the-scenes updates and news commentary sit at the other end: high effort, weak signal.
The same lever operates between pillars. The engagement gap between the strongest and weakest pillars in the corpus is wide, and the weak end is where most creators default: product launches, hiring updates, trend commentary. Audit your recent posts. If most of them live in those low-demand territories, shift the mix toward the ground your thesis actually claims.
Narrow Now, Expand Later
Authority is earned by depth first, breadth second. Own two or three pillars completely before you widen. The creators who scatter early never give the graph, or the reader, a chance to know what they are for.
Save your pillars below and they flow straight into the ARENA card of Your Playbook and the Blueprint. Next: the proof layer that makes your claims believable.
