Hook Architecture
The two lines the reader actually sees, and why no hook type beats another
Your hook is not an introduction to a post. It IS the post, from the reader's perspective.
A reader scrolling a feed decides fast, and the two visible lines are all they have to decide on. A strong hook creates tension the reader cannot resolve without clicking 'see more.'
One caution before the craft. When we fitted a model to predict which posts land Exceptional, hook features added nothing: the model performs the same with them and without them. So treat everything below as craft for holding a reader, not as a lever for reach.
The Hook Matrix
Contrarian hooks put a widely held belief on the page and disagree with it. They work when you can name who holds the belief and say why it fails. Data hooks open on a figure specific enough to be checked, which is why a rounded number reads as decoration.
Question hooks ask something the reader was already half-thinking, and fail when the question is one only you care about. Story hooks drop the reader into a moment already moving, which means starting at the line where something changed rather than at the setup.
Choose your hook type before you write a single sentence. No type outranks another in our data, so the choice is about which one your material can actually pay off.
The Compression Test
Cut your hook to 10 words. If the tension survives, the hook is structurally sound. If it dies, the length was doing the work and the idea was not.
Then check the hook against the post's intent. A promise hook on a Connect post sets up a payoff the body never makes, and the reader feels the mismatch even when both halves are well written.
Hooks in Practice
Here is the finding most hook advice will not tell you. We tested hook features inside a model built to predict Exceptional posts, and they carried no incremental signal. Contrarian openers do not out-earn story openers once you account for the creator and everything else about the post.
That is good news for the way you write. It means you can pick the hook your material supports rather than the hook a template told you scores highest, and spend the saved effort on the argument underneath it.
