Art of Posting - Lesson 5

Structure Patterns

How shape and white space hold a reader, and why structure is not a reach lever

Readers in a feed do not start at the top and work down. They scan for shape first, and decide from the shape whether the post is worth the time. If nothing signals scannability, most of the audience has already gone.

The 'Inverted Pyramid' principle: most important point first. Supporting evidence flows down. Conclusion is implied, not stated.

White space is part of the structure. Single-sentence lines give the eye somewhere to land, and a wall of text asks for a commitment the reader has not made yet.

The Pattern Hierarchy

Structure does more than aid reading. It signals the writer's clarity of thought. The Hook → List shape works because it front-loads value and back-loads depth, which is how a scrolling reader takes anything in.

Strong posts don't just have good ideas. They have ideas arranged so the reader can absorb them at speed.

Scannability and Performance

Be careful what you expect structure to buy you. The structural factors we can measure against engagement barely move it: word count correlates at r = -0.005 and cognitive load at r = 0.006, which is under 1% of the variation in either case. Split the index by structural archetype and the Exceptional rate stays flat at roughly 9 to 10 per cent whichever shape the creator uses.

So structure is not a reach lever, and anyone selling you one is guessing. What it does buy is the reader's willingness to stay, which is worth having on its own terms. Break the wall of text, mark the sections, and let the shape of the post tell the reader what kind of thing it is.

Building Your Structure Toolkit

Pick the shape the material actually is. A set of parallel items is a list. A sequence where each step depends on the last is a framework. An argument is prose, and forcing an argument into bullets removes the connections that made it an argument.

Read 10 posts you admire and name the structure of each. The two or three shapes you keep reaching for are your defaults, and knowing them is what lets you deliberately break from them.
