Authority Flywheel - Lesson 1

The Trust-Conversion Flywheel

Sell posts average the lowest engagement of any intent, and what to put in front of them

The 'Premature Ask' is the most common mistake in creator-led businesses. A creator builds an audience, launches an offer, converts almost nobody, and wonders why.

Here is the one comparison that matters, and it is measured inside individual creators rather than across them. When a writer sells, they underperform their own average post by roughly a third, and only about one in four of the creators in the index beats their own average on a Sell post. Selling costs you attention in the moment, which is a fine trade if the attention was built first and a bad one if it wasn't.

The flywheel below is a model for sequencing that trade, not a measured funnel. We can measure what each intent earns on average. We cannot measure what happened in a reader's head between post 3 and post 9, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

The 3-Stage Flywheel

Stage 1, Awareness. Reach posts, mostly Inspire and Provoke, the two intents creators most often beat their own average on. These are the two that put you in front of people who do not follow you yet.

Stage 2, Trust. Authority posts, mostly Teach (1,058 average) and Connect (924). Lower ceilings than Inspire, and they do the work of turning a reader into someone who believes you.

Stage 3, Conversion. Sell posts (820 average, 11.8% of all corpus posts). The lowest average of the six, which is the price of the ask.

Why the Sequence Matters

Don't run Stage 3 without Stage 1 and Stage 2 posts in the recent window. The averages above are the reason: a Sell post starts from the weakest position of any intent, so everything around it has to carry more.

Treat the compounding claim as a working model rather than a finding. We have no per-reader conversion data. What we can say from the creator windows is narrower and still useful: the five highest elite rates in the cohort all belong to creators running 11.5% Sell or less, and the creator with the heaviest Sell share at 30.7% sits in the bottom quarter on elite rate.

Rebalancing Your Flywheel

Across creators in the index, the average hard-sell share sits near 10% of posts. That is the practical benchmark: about one Sell post in ten, not one in three.

Sahil Bloom's signature: Story → Philosophy → Soft mention. He rarely sells directly, and his conversion mechanism is reader-initiated.

The audience seeks out his offers after consuming high-trust content. That's a healthy flywheel.
